1. ถ้อยคำซึ่งเยเรมีย์ผู้พยากรณ์บอกแก่บารุคบุตรชายเนริยาห์เมื่อเขาเขียนถ้อยคำเหล่านี้ลงในหนังสือตามคำบอกของเยเรมีย์ ในปีที่สี่แห่งรัชกาลเยโฮยาคิม ราชบุตรของโยสิยาห์ กษัตริย์แห่งยูดาห์ว่า

2. "บารุคเอ๋ย พระเยโฮวาห์พระเจ้าแห่งอิสราเอล ตรัสแก่ท่านดังนี้ว่า

3. เจ้าว่า `บัดนี้ วิบัตแก่ข้า เพราะพระเยโฮวาห์ทรงเพิ่มความทุกข์เข้าที่ความเศร้าโศกของข้า ข้าก็เหน็ดเหนื่อยด้วยการคร่ำครวญของข้า ข้าไม่ประสบความสงบเลย'

4. เจ้าจงบอกเขาว่า พระเยโฮวาห์ตรัสดังนี้ว่า ดูเถิด สิ่งใดที่เราก่อสร้างขึ้น เราจะทำลายลง และสิ่งใดที่เราได้ปลูก เราจะถอนขึ้นคือแผ่นดินนี้ทั้งหมด

5. และเจ้าจะหาสิ่งใหญ่โตเพื่อตัวเองหรือ อย่าหามันเลย เพราะพระเยโฮวาห์ตรัสว่า ดูเถิด เราจะนำเหตุร้ายมาเหนือเนื้อหนังทั้งสิ้น แต่เราจะให้ชีวิตของเจ้าแก่เจ้าเป็นบำเหน็จแห่งการสงครามในทุกสถานที่ที่เจ้าจะไป"
